The Handmaids Hospital, Ibiono, is a medical project of the religious Congregation of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, HHCJ.  It is a non-profit facility, with the goal of providing medical care to the medically underserved people in the immediate local community, especially women and children, with a unique option for the poor.

It was officially opened in 2008 in Ibiono in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The population of the community it serves is about 400,000 people, mostly peasant farmers who cannot ordinarily afford medical care, and so rarely go to the hospitals even when critical.  However, the number seeking medical attention at Handmaids Hospital is increasing on daily basis due to its unique care and affordability .

However, in spite of the growing need to attend to the medical needs of teaming patients, with only local efforts to sustain it, the facility remains a poorly equipped 25-bed space. It currently has one long hall demarcated by walls to serve as wards for different genders and age groups requiring admission.  It lacks   an adequate physical structure and the necessary medical supplies and equipment to provide the best care for our patients. We need help to expand the physical structure to include better equipped physical exam rooms, emergency unit, labor and delivery unit, pediatric unit, male and female wards, good laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology unit.

We need about five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) to achieve our goal of "transforming this hospital into a well equipped modern, state of the art, self sufficient medical facility".

It is a crucial apostolate of rendering medical and humanitarian assistance to the less privileged and the most vulnerable – especially women and children, without discrimination. If the hospital is physically expanded and well equipped, it would provide a self- sufficient medical home to many, especially the poor, women and children, who may not have the financial ability to travel to the city for medical care.
